CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – An NBC News interview with Jefferson Council President Thomas Neale claims the reason UVA suspended the University Guides this fall is 13 new Youngkin-appointed visitors “looked at this and said this has to change”. Last week, UVA spokesman Brian Coy in a statement denied criticism as the reason for the suspension, saying instead they’re concerned about not enough guides to operate the required number of tours, and the information they’re giving is not consistent. Neale, a 1974 UVA grad, said in the interview his group led Governor Youngkin to these appointments.
Neale continued, “So yeah, we raised the issue and now that they have 13 — and not all of the Youngkin appointees are homogenous, some are fairly moderate — but all of them looked at this and said this has to change.”
Neale says they want a more complete telling of Jefferson’s history not just as a slaveowner, but measures such as the 1807 signing of law that eliminated importation of slaves.
