Sep 18, 2023, Announcement
We write on behalf of The Center’s Board of Directors with wonderful news: Melanie Benjamin has been chosen as the organization’s next Executive Director.
When Peter announced in February that he would retire by the end of the year, we were fortunate in having time to consider carefully what The Center needed in its next leader. It was a long list. We sought the right blend of idealism and pragmatism; the capacity for both creative and critical thinking; the ability to convey the value of our work in compelling ways to different audiences; and the desire to tap into the limitless potential of healthy aging opportunities for all.
Melanie stood out from a field of applicants that came from across the country. Her passion for The Center’s mission and her appreciation and respect for the needs of seniors in our community were evident. Her commitment to learning inside and outside the organization and moving from idea to impact is inspiring. It was clear from the outset that she will lead with vision, with compassion, and with the sense of humor that nonprofit work often needs.
Many of you know Melanie already. She joined The Center as Philanthropy Director in 2019 after serving as Development Director with the Center for Open Science. She brings with her more than 20 years of experience in educational development, advancing organizational goals at major universities. A gifted communicator, Melanie’s ability to listen and connect with many constituencies is perfectly aligned with The Center’s planned growth in outreach, advocacy, and infrastructure.
We are grateful to everyone who participated in the search for a new Executive Director, particularly Search and Transition Committee members Rene Bond, Mark Brown, Katie Caverly, Peggy Slez, and Cecil Thompson. Consultants Lindsey O-Pries and Rita Utz from Richmond firm The Spark Mill provided guidance along the way.
As we welcome Melanie into her new role as Executive Director on November 1st, we look forward to your continuing support of The Center’s work to ensure all older adults in our community have the access they need to healthy aging resources.
