CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia 5th District Congressman Bob Good has filed a petition for a recount after narrowly losing a Republican primary to state Senator John McGuire in results certified July 2 by the State Board of Elections. The Good campaign announced Thursday it filed the recount petition in Goochland County, near Richmond. Earlier this month, the state board of elections declared McGuire the winner over Good in the 5th Congressional District Republican primary.
McGuire’s margin of victory was 374 votes out of nearly 63,000 ballots cast. Good can ask for a recount because the margin of victory is less than a percentage point, however, his campaign has to pay for it since the margin of .6-percent is above the .5-percent margin where the state would pay.
McGuire’s campaign stated that a recount is unnecessary, and he’s claimed victory since preliminary results were first revealed the night of June 18.
