CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) The results are in. This year’s The Corner t-shirt design contest winner is Matthew Turner, a longtime Charlottesville resident, father of three and visual journalist.

Turner was one of many The Corner listeners who entered his design back in April but after The Corner staff narrowed the designs down to three t-shirts, it was up to the listeners to decide in an online vote.

A month later, Turner has been revealed as the winner.

Turner has not only won the opportunity to have his design on The Corner t-shirt but has acquired tickets to 10 different shows at The Jefferson Theater, with all of the shows chosen by him, valued at $400.

“My whole family listens to The Corner,” Turner told Cville Right Now. “This was also the perfect opportunity to secure some free tickets to some great music.”

Turner designed his shirt to resemble an array of colorful stickers. Each part of the design relates to the vibe of 106.1 The Corner.

One sticker reads, “Different is good,” The Corner’s slogan. Others depict a radio and a peace sign. Each patch speaks to the 106.1 The Corner listening experience, Turner said.

For Turner, the design contest has been in the back of his mind for quite some time.

“We are a big ‘Fridays After Five’ family, so I’ve seen the shirts around,” he said. “I always thought, ‘Yeah, maybe one day I would design one,’ but it was my wife who gave me that little nudge to finally do something this year.”

While clothing design may not be his career, Turner said he found joy in the process of laying out the winning shirt.

“I have done a little bit of design in the past, but now it’s more of a fun thing for me,” he said. “I really enjoy doing it and getting to be creative.”

Turner’s design started with just a sketch and morphed into a winning piece.

“At first, I thought I would go towards something a little bit more a little bit more edgy kind of playing off of the corner idea,” he said. “But I felt like that had kind of been done before.”

Turner turned to his own environment to get inspired for the final design.

“My family is big on stickers. I have three kids and their stickers are everywhere,” he said. “That definitely sparked the idea for the end design and that’s way more fun anyway.”

With the contest coming to a close, Turner is excited to have his winning design out there.

“It was really fun to create and go through this whole process with The Corner,” he said. “We’re going to go down tonight for Fridays After Five and to see the shirt in person at the pavilion which I am very excited for.”

106.1 personalities will be handing the shirts out at events around Charlottsville over the summer. Listeners are also welcome to stop by 1140 Rose Hill Drive to pick up a shirt while supplies and sizes last.
