CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – Each week Anand Harsh of 106.1 The Corner will direct your attention to the music and arts events happening in Charlottesville and surrounding areas that you absolutely can’t miss. These are at the very minimum shows you should hit if you’re in the neighborhood all the way up to cancel-your-plans, call the sitter, and buy your tickets right now because this is the biggest thing since sliced bread.

CALL THE SITTER

She’s put out six albums in four years, has an incredible voice, and is such a poignant songwriter. I’m so serious get your childcare arrangements made, because you absolutely must go see Maya de Vitry at The Southern because she’s about to blow up. She’s the real deal. So many good singer-songwriters come through Charlottesville, but she’s head and shoulders above the pack.

This Saturday marks the birthday of Mac Outlaw, one of Charlottesville’s most beloved guitarists. As such two of his bands will be performing at Superfly Brewing Co. to commemorate the occasion. His synth pop band Films on Song headlines the night, along with his pop punk outfit, Pinkish. Unfortunately, he has also selected his favorite trash punk band, shakiira, to open. They are hot garbage. But two out of three ain’t bad.

CHECK IT OUT

  • Apr 28: Bday Pricing @ James Monroe’s Highland – Monday is James Monroe’s birthday, so there’s special pricing on admittance to Highland to celebrate. Go get some education in your life with a beautiful tour of a founding father’s home.
  • May 2: Free Union @ Fridays After Five — It’s FAF season again and Ting Pavilion is hosting some incredible local-ish acts. Free Union is an incredibly fun band perfect for the whole family, and there’s obviously food and drinks galore and proceeds of the profits go to help a number of community-based non-profits.
  • May 2: Sisters & Brothers @ Jefferson Theater – A night of Grateful Dead with Sisters & Brothers featuring a number of special guests is just what the doctor ordered. Plus Andy Tichenor absolutely shreds on guitar, so you know I’m going to be front row for that one.

DROP IN

  • May 3: Teddy Bear Clinic @ Boys & Girls Club of Central Virginia – A Teddy Bear Clinic helps children to be less afraid of doctor’s visits and they also happen to be incredibly cute. The first 100 kids will get lunch and a free teddy bear, and I happen to know that Cav Man will be there Saturday morning.
