CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – Each week Anand Harsh of 106.1 The Corner will direct your attention to the music and arts events happening in Charlottesville and surrounding areas that you absolutely can’t miss. These are at the very minimum shows you should hit if you’re in the neighborhood all the way up to cancel-your-plans, call the sitter, and buy your tickets right now because this is the biggest thing since sliced bread.

CALL THE SITTER

I’m so primed from the fantastic show by LA LUZ last week that Hotel Fiction has risen to my highest possible ranking of “Call the Sitter” this Thursday. A female-led indie rock outfit out of Athens, Georgia, a hotbed for this type of scene, Hotel Fiction has that glittering indie rock sound that’s so intoxicating. And they’ve gotten a huge co-sign from The Corner favorites Flipturn.

Missy Raines is one of the most talented upright bass players on the planet. She’s got a GRAMMY nomination and a hot, young roster of pickers behind her with her outfit Allegheny. If you like bluegrass or Americana even a little bit, you’re going to have to catch this act to certify your bona fides.

CHECK IT OUT

  • Apr 22: Jim Lauderdale & The Game Changers – Jim Lauderdale is a legendary songwriter, having penned tunes for LeeAnn Womack, Elvis Costello, and George Strait, but I’m a big fan of behind-the-scenes folks getting their chance in the spotlight.
  • Apr 26: The War and Treaty @ The Jefferson – Thanks to a feature by Zach Bryan, this husband-wife duo is enjoying some much deserved attention, but their soulful songs and fun takes on country and Americana well qualify them to be center stage.
  • Apr 26: Them Dirty Roses @ The Southern – This is some good, ol’ fashioned Southern rock. Pure and simple. No frills, no pretension, just some good ol’ boys from Alabama giving you modern Skynyrd right down the pipe. You’re getting exactly what you’d expect, and that’s a good time.

DROP IN

  • Apr 24: Beatles Triva @ Alamo Drafthouse – My toxic trait is that I think I’m really good at trivia when there are actually people who study stuff in order to know how to properly win at trivia instead of just assuming random facts will come to me in the heat of the moment. But… I really do think I could clean up at Beatles trivia. I really think I know a lot about them! Perhaps you are also as delusional as I am.
