CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – One day after Gov. Abigail Spanberger made an appearance in Charlottesville, Sen. Mark Warner did the same on Friday.

Virginia’s senior senator shared a similar message to the Governor during an event on the Downtown Mall, urging residents of the commonwealth’s 5th District to vote early for both him and Democratic nominee for the House of Representatives Tom Perriello.

The last Democrat to represent the 5th District from 2009-11, Perriello is seeking to unseat Republican Rep. John McGuire in this November’s election. Meanwhile, Warner is seeking his fourth term, which he said in his remarks in Charlottesville would be his final one in the Senate. He is facing Republican challenger Bert Mizusawa.

This November will not be the first time Warner and Perriello share a ticket, as the two both won in 2008 for their respective first terms in Congress.

“It is an honor to be on the ticket with Mark Warner, because I’m undefeated when I’m on the ticket with Mark Warner,” Perriello joked during his remarks.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Warner praised Perriello, who served as the last Democrat to represent the 5th District’s from 2009-11, for reaching out to the southern areas of the 5th District, which traditionally vote Republican, as well as his ability to provide “an independent voice,” even considering his status as a Democrat.

“One thing about Tom, that’s one reason I’m so proud of his doing this, is that Tom is willing to call out bad actions from either team,” he said.

Both Warner and Perriello took time at Friday’s event to call out the Trump Administration, particularly highlighting the increased price of gas and other products in the wake of the Iran War and the administration’s tariffs, in an effort to rally voters for this year’s midterms.

“This is not so much a traditional ‘Republican vs. Democrat,” Warner said. “This is whether you are simply lying to follow Donald Trump in all his deeds, or people who want to stand up against the overreach.”

While Warner kept most of his attacks centered on Trump, he did mention his opponent, Mizusawa, when asked if he the two would debate during this election cycle. At least two debates between the two have been cancelled, with Mizusawa’s campaign telling 8 News after the second was canceled earlier this week he “is ready, willing, and able to debate Warner, but for the first time in Warner’s political career, the Senator refuses to step to the podium.”

Speaking about the prospect of a debate to the media Tuesday, Warner mentioned that him and Mizusawa shared a stage at a joint forum in Buena Vista on Labor Day. He added that for the next few weeks, he’ll need to “stay focused on my job in the Senate, because I think there is a chance we can get some safety protocols on (Artificial Intelligence,)” a topic he spoke at length on in his remarks.

“I also think that most Virginians, I found, when they hear my opponent actually wants Donald Trump to have a third term, and he favors the Iran War and doesn’t think it’s really that important folks’ gas prices, costs have gone up, I think they have heard enough,” he said.

Now backed publicly by major Virginia Democrats, Perriello said he believes Virginia appreciates “leaders with common sense” and think that voters are seeing a coalition form on the Democratic side ahead of this election.

“We can bring those costs down on day one by restoring Congress’ job,” Perriello said. “Which means ending this war that we don’t need, so that people can have a chance to make it to the next paycheck.”
