CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — Isaac Trimble’s victory over Brennan Morgan helped propel No. 9 North Carolina State past Virginia, 19-17, in an ACC dual wrestling meet Friday in Raleigh, N.C.

The Hoos started off strong in the lighter weight classes to jump out to an early lead, including a dramatic victory at 133 from Marlon Yarbrough who upset State’s Troy Hohman, ranked No. 32 nationally.

The action started to turn in the hosts’ favor in the heavier bouts, culminating with the victory by Trimble, ranked second nationally. The dual dropped the Hoos to 0-2 in ACC action, and they will look to earn their first ACC win with a match in John Paul Jones Arena against UNC Friday evening at 7 p.m. 

Swimming 

No. 1 Virginia women and No. 21 Virginia men welcomed the Penn State Nittany Lions to the Aquatics and Fitness Center to celebrate Senior Day for the 2025-26 season.  Jack Aikins, Sebastien Sergile, Aimee Canny, Matthew Heilmann, Bryn Greenwaldt, Sophia Knapp, Carly Novelline, Zoe Skirboll, and Emma Weber were honored before Virginia put on a show for the home crowd, with the women’s swimming every race on the way to a 154-61 victory, and the men’s team winning all but one race, earning a 133-85 victory.  Next, both squads head to Blacksburg to battle Virginia Tech this Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. 

Basketball 

Men’s basketball faced both ACC teams from the West Coast, California and Stanford, last week at home and earned a pair of double-digit victories.  A long scoring run to begin the second half catapulted the Hoos past Cal 84-60, and a 22-point performance from forward Thijs De Ridder took Virginia past Stanford 70-55.  The Cavalier hit the road next for a Tuesday battle with old friend Isaac McKneely and the Louisville Cardinals Tuesday at 7 p.m., before flying to Dallas to battle the SMU Mustangs Saturday at Noon.   

The Virginia women won two thrillers that went down to the wire on the road last week.  The Cavaliers dispatched Florida State in Tallahassee in overtime 91-87 and then beat Georgia Tech 61-59. The Hoos returned home Sunday against Syracuse, hoping to remain undefeated in ACC play. But the Orange had one of their highest scoring second halves of the season, pulling away and defeating Virginia 79-60. UVA will look to regroup against the Duke Blue Devils Thursday evening at 8 p.m. 

Squash 

The No. 4 men’s squash team comfortably handled No. 8 Princeton in their visit to Charlottesville 7-2.  After giving two quick points in the early going, the Hoos won the next six points to take the match by five.  No. 4 Princeton women’s squash fared much better against No. 6 UVA, not letting the Hoos onto the scoresheet during its 9-0 win.  Both squads are scheduled to meet Tufts University in Springfield, Virginia, this Saturday.  Both matches start at 1 p.m.
