CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Virginia’s women’s soccer team topped Florida State in penalty kicks on Sunday night in the ACC tournament quarterfinals.

FSU beat UVA during the regular season but behind a career-high eight saves from keeper Victoria Safradin, the Cavaliers edged the Seminoles 6-5 in the penalty kicks, netting the winner when Maya Carter converted, sending the visitors on to the ACC semifinals Thursday night against Stanford in Cary N.C.

The week began with UVA ending the regular season with a 2-0 win over Boston College, a victory that gave coach Steve Swanson the 500th win of his college coaching career.

Men’s Soccer: The No. 6 men’s soccer squad finished its regular season on Friday evening in Dallas against the SMU Mustangs.  The Mustangs held the Hoos in check for 84 minutes before freshman Bacary Tandjigora struck for the winning goal that gave the Hoos their tenth win of the year, finishing the season with four draws and only one loss. Virginia will be hosting an ACC Quarterfinal this Sunday afternoon at Klockner against the winner of Notre Dame and North Carolina.

Field Hockey: Field hockey had two ranked opponents to contend with last week.  The No. 11 Maryland Terapins came to town on Tuesday, and held the Hoos at bay for 50 minutes, before two goals in two minutes by Caroline Nemec and Riley Savage fired the Hoos to a 2-0 victory.  The battle with the No. 6 Wake Forest Demon Deacons was much more dramatic.  The two sides traded blows for an hour in a contest featuring eight goals.  The Hoos came out on top with a 5-3 victory.  The win earned the Hoos a share of the reguler-season title, along with Wake Forest and North Carolina.  The ACC Tournament commences on Tuesday, and Virginia will take on Stanford at 3 p.m. in Louisville.

Volleyball: Out of two attempts to climb the ACC table on Grounds last weekend, the volleyball team came up 0-2.   On Friday, they went into the final set against Georgia Tech tied 2-2 after two narrow defeats to start the night, unfortunately, a strong jacket run ended the set and the match 15-5 (3-2).  Clemson took on the Hoos Sunday and took four sets to dispatch Virginia, with set four being particularly painful, finishing 26-24 and robbing the Hoos of an opportunity to continue the match.  The Hoos hit the road for a Friday match against No. 7 SMU, and a Sunday match against No. 4 Pitt.

Football: A strong offensive performance for the No. 12 Hoos took down the California Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon, finishing 31-21 in Berkeley.  A late interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Kam Robinson, along with two rushing touchdowns by halfback J’Mari Taylor and 100 yards on the ground, sealed the victory for the Hoos.  Three games remain for the Hoos, as they come home to face Wake Forest this Saturday at 7 p.m.

Basketball: Both basketball squads begin their campaigns this week.  The men’s team, led by new head coach Ryan Odom, takes on the Rider Broncs Monday at 7 p.m., before welcoming in North Carolina Central on Friday at 7 p.m.; both games are at John Paul Jones arena.  Amaka Agugua-Hamilton’s Women’s team also takes to the JPJ court this week, with home matches on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Morgan State, and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Bucknell.

More action: The No. 1 men’s golf team was upset by the No. 10 Florida Gators in the final of the East Lake Cup Final by a score of 3-2.  Virginia has finished at least second in the last four iterations of the East Lake Cup.

Virginia rowing won the 4+ final and finished second place overall at the Princeton Chase in New Jersey.  Meanwhile, at the Navy Classic at the Naval academy in Annapolis, Virginia wrestler Keyveon Roller won the title in the 125-weight class, leading five Hoos who placed among the field.

In further ACC postseason action, fueled by a second-place finish by Gary Martin, the No. 4 Virginia men’s cross-country team won the ACC team title in Louisville.  The Virginia women finished fifth in the ACC during the same meet.

Both squash teams also began their campaigns over the weekend. During a lengthy but successful road trip, they both returned undefeated.  The men’s squad is 2-0, while the women’s squad is 3-0.

This week, the rowing team takes on the Rivanna Romp on Sunday right here in Earlysville.  Members of both Virginia tennis teams head to Chapel Hill for the ITA Sectional competition.  Finally, the Wrestling team heads to the Journeymen WrangleMania Duals in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
