CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) —After snapping a two-game mini-slide with a win over Pittsburgh on Thursday, the Virginia women’s basketball team rallied only to fall in overtime Saturday against North Carolina State.
Thursday, UVA’s defense stifled the Panthers, who could not break 50 points. The ‘Hoos, meanwhile, exploded in the second half, outscoring Pitt 46-24 en route to a 84-46 win.  Caitlin Weimar led the way with 20 points for Virginia, closely followed by Kymora Johnson with 17.
With the impending weekend weather, Virginia’s Sunday game against N.C. State was moved up to Saturday afternoon.
The Wolfpack stormed out to a large early lead, but the Cavaliers rallied after the break, outscoring N.C. State 48-32 to send the game into overtime.
The Wolfpack won it on a pair of made free throws made by Zoe Brooks in the closing seconds of the 78-76 victory.
UVA will try to get back in the win column on the road this week, playing at Wake Forest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and at rival Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Hours before the women’s game, the then-No. 14 men’s team faced then-No. 22 North Carolina at home. The rivalry game started out strong for the Hoos, who comfortably outscored the Tar Heels 43-34 in the first half. But UNC found its back into the game, outscoring Virginia 51-37 in the second half to leave John Paul Jones Arena with an 85-80 win.
Virginia, now No. 17 in the AP Top 25 Poll, will look for a rebound against Notre Dame on the road on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Wrestling:
Wrestling faced a ranked battle with one of the nation’s powerhouses in No. 24 Stanford.   The Cardinal had answers for everything the Hoos threw at them, and dropped only two matches to Brenan Morgan and No. 27 Nick Hamilton. Stanford won the dual 31-9.  The Cavaliers’ next dual is in Durham on Friday at 7 p.m. against Duke.
Swimming:
The Cavalier men and women’s squads headed to Raleigh for its final dual meet of the season against the NC State Wolfpack.  The men earned five race wins from Maximus Williamson, David King, and Thomas Heilmann but came up short of a victory, falling 172.5-89.5 to the Wolfpack.  On the other side, the women, who remain ranked No.1 in the nation, took 11 race wins of 14 events, and set pool records in 10 of them.  The biggest race winner of the day for Virginia was Aimee Canny, who set two pool records in the 200 breast and 200 free, winning three races en route to an 181-113 UVA win.
Tennis:
Both Virginia tennis teams qualified for the ITA Team National Indoor Championships after two victories each at this weekend’s ITA Kickoff at Boar’s Head in Charlottesville.  The No. 14 women’s team bested Rice before beating USC to qualify.  Meanwhile, the No. 2 men took down Michigan to qualify after beating Indiana in their opening match.
Track & Field:
Virginia competed in the Hokie Invitational last weekend.  Field athletes Grace Smith and Keyandre Davis won the women’s long Jump and men’s weight throw on day one.  Freshman Ava Rice broke a freshman record in the 60-meter hurdles, setting an 8.39 on her debut to qualify for the final.  She finished second in the final.   Peter Djan also triumphed in the 60-meter dash.  On day two, Brooke’Lyn Drakeford won the 400-meter dash and Elsa Spoor took home first in the women’s high jump.
