CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- No. 13 Virginia softball added four wins to its ledger, taking a midweek game against Liberty on Tuesday and then sweeping an ACC series from Pittsburgh over the weekend.

After going down 1-0 to the Flames, Alex Call knocked a two-run single into the left-center field gap in the sixth to turn the game around and take the win 2-1.

Against Pittsburgh, the Hoos set the tone in game one with a 10-0 run-rule victory.  The Panthers only managed two runs throughout the rest of the series, losing 8-1 to Virginia in Game 2, and losing 4-1 in Game 3.

The Duke Blue Devils will welcome the Hoos for a three-game series Thursday through Saturday in Durham as ACC play continues.

Tennis

No. 4 men’s tennis took two wins from two on a weekend trip to Florida.  The Hoos comfortably shut out the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee 4-0, before taking on the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday. Despite a three-hour rain delay, and the Canes grabbing one-point from a doubles win and singles win, Virginia came out the victors 4-1.

The No. 13 women’s tennis team had a banner weekend in North Carolina facing Duke and the University of North Carolina.  On Friday, No. 24 Duke matched up well with Virginia, and the match see-sawed back and forth, with the score not being settled until the final matchup of the day.  Melodie Collard notched a Wahoo winner against No. 112 Eleana Yu to give Virginia a 4-2 triumph.

Virginia went into Sunday’s matchup with No. 5 UNC as underdogs. UNC took the doubles point, and the result once again came down to the final game.  The Wahoo heroine was No. 32 Annabelle Xu, who pulled off an upset against No. 26 Tatum Evans of UNC to give Virginia a 4-3 victory on Sunday.  The Hoos will take their California trip this weekend, facing No. 19 California on Friday, and Stanford on Sunday.

Baseball

The No. 10 baseball squad won a wild game on Tuesday evening from Virginia Credit Union Stadium in Fredericksburg against their old ACC rivals, the Maryland Terrapins. Buoyed by a nine-run eighth inning, the Hoos took down Maryland 16-6 by run-rule.  From there, Virginia headed north to square off against the Boston College Eagles for a three-game series last weekend.  The Eagles shocked the Hoos with not only a 5-3 defeat in Game 1, but a 17-0 run-rule defeat in seven innings in Game 2.  Virginia fought back and grabbed a 3-1 win in game three.  Virginia will face Old Dominion on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Disharoon Park, before welcoming the No. 7 Florida State Seminoles to Charlottesville for a three-game set Thursday through Saturday.
