CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- The No. 16 Virginia men’s soccer team earned a hard-fought victory over No. 2 North Carolina State on the road in Raleigh on Sunday night. Nick Simmonds’ headed goal in the 20th minute proved the difference maker, his fifth goal of the season, while the Virginia defense held fast for its sixth clean sheet of the season.
Despite six men going into the referee’s book on yellow cards, the Hoos won 1-0. Virginia will host Notre Dame Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.
Women’s Soccer:
On the Klockner pitch on Saturday night, the No. 1 women’s soccer team, handled the Virgina Tech Hokies, 2-1 to the delight of a raucous home crowd. Maggie Cagle (5) and Lia Godfrey (7) fired the Hoos past the Hokies to ensure Virginia remains unbeaten. Goalkeeper Victoria Safradin and the backline, despite being beaten once by Tech attacker Natalie Mitchell, stood strong to keep the visitors’ many offensive threats quiet.
The team hits the road to California this week, beginning with a Thursday evening tilt against California at 6:30 p.m., before they battle a dangerous Stanford team on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Football:
Football earned yet another statement victory in the 2025 season by edging out the Louisville Cardinals in overtime, 30-27. UVA’s defense forced two big turnovers and converted them both for touchdowns, keeping the vaunted Cardinals offense quiet. Despite only three net rushing yards, it would Virginia halfback, Jamari Taylor, who scored the game winning touchdown in overtime.
Three Hoos earned conference player of the week honors as well, with Mitchell Melton earning Defensive Lineman of the Week, Kam Robinson Linebacker of the Week, and backup punter Elijah Slibeck won Specialist of the week, filling in for the injured Daniel Sparks.
This week is an open date before Washington State comes to Scott Stadium on Oct. 18.
Field Hockey
It took double overtime to separate the Hoos from the No.7 Duke Blue Devils on Friday evening. However, Emma Watchilla, 72 minutes after the match began, was finally able to break through the deadlock, giving Virginia a 1-0 win. Goalkeeper Nilou Lempers only had to make two saves for the Hoos throughout the match, but she did earn her fifth shutout of the season.
Ahead is potentially the most important match of the season for the Hoos, as they host the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels, the squad that ended their season last year. The match is Friday night at 5 p.m.
Volleyball
It was a mixed weekend for volleyball back in the familiar confines of the Aquatics and Fitness Center on Grounds. The Hoos fell short against Boston College on Friday evening in three sets, despite coming close to making set two competitive. They fared much better on Sunday against Syracuse, going down 0-1, the Hoos stormed back in sets two and four before taking the final set 17-15. Freshman outside hitter Reagan Ennis, who had a marvelous weekend in both matches, racked up 32 kills in the Syracuse match alone, good for second all-time for kills by a freshman in a single match. Ennis added 12 more in the BC match, bringing her weekend total to 44 kills, earning her ACC Freshman of the Week.
The Hoos have two tough tests ahead on the road this weekend, battling Notre Dame Friday evening at 6:30, before heading to Kentucky to square off with No. 5 Louisville Sunday afternoon at noon.
Women’s Golf
Despite a tough weekend for the Hoos, Kennedy Swedick shot well at the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Chicago last week. Swedick shot 5-under 211, tied for fourth overall in the competition. Remi Bacardi also managed to pip the top 20, finishing in 16th courtesy of a 1-under 215. The Hoos head out west for the Stanford Invitational beginning Oct. 17.
Men’s Golf
The Hoos finished the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational last Tuesday tied for first alongside UNC, Texas, and Vanderbilt. Ben James, who was just named September ACC Golfer of the Month as of October third, shot a 3-over 73 (finished tied for first and getting him into the playoff) and Bryan Lee chipped in with a 1-under 69, to cap a solid team performance.
Next up on the fall schedule is the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate on Oct. 24.

Women’s tennis hosts the Wahoowa Invitational beginning this Friday, October 10th against ODU, JMU, and West Virginia. Meanwhile men’s tennis heads to Blacksburg beginning Thursday, October 9th for ITA Atlantic Regional action. Finally, the No. 1 ranked women and No. 13 ranked men of Virginia Swim and Dive open their season on the road in Gainesville, Florida against the No. 6/4 UF Gators beginning Friday at 10 a.m.
