CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Despite falling behind early in the first quarter, Virginia football triumphed on Saturday 13-7 in the Gator Bowl over the Missouri Tigers to cap off an historic 11-3 season. Down star running back J’Mari Taylor, it was up to the Virginia defense to keep Mizzou quiet and off the scoreboard, and John Rudzinski’s unit was more than up to the challenge, minimizing the Tigers’ offensive output at every juncture to make two field goals and a Harrison Waylee touchdown the difference in earning the Hoos the victory.
Men’s basketball had one game still to play before Christmas on Monday and had no trouble dispatching the visiting American University Eagles 95-51. Belgian forward Thijs De Ridder put up 27 points and eight rebounds in the game, and Dallin Hall notched seven assists in a near-faultless team performance by the Hoos. UVA will face the Virginia Tech Hokies on New Years Eve beginning at 2 p.m., and you can listen live on WINA. The road trip will continue this Saturday at 11 a.m. in Raleigh for a battle between the Hoos and the NC State Wolfpack.
Wrestling, following Coach Steve Garland’s 200th career victory in Pennsylvania, stopped in Philadelphia this past Monday to battle the Penn Quakers. Though Virginia won some key heavyweight battles, Penn’s strength throughout the bench carried the day by a score of 24-16. UVA heads to the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga this Saturday and Sunday.
Women’s Basketball gets back in action this week with three games. They will take to the John Paul Jones arena court Monday against the SMU Mustangs beginning at 7 p.m. On New Years Day, they will play host to the Clemson Tigers, also at 7 p.m., before hitting the road to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles Sunday at 2 p.m. All games can be heard on WINA.
