CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Home runs from Bella Cabral and Kelsey Hackett vaulted Virginia softball over North Carolina 7-3 to its first ACC win of the year on Friday night.
In Game 1 of the following day’s doubleheader, bullpen blunders in extra innings sank the ‘Hoos as the Tar Heels’ offense came to life to even the series 11-9. What hitting prowess Virginia could not muster in game two, it saved for the finale. The Cavaliers outlasted UNC 19-14 to earn the series victory.
Meanwhile, the Charlotte 49’ers blanked the baseball Hoos 14-0 on Tuesday before Virginia bounced back with an 8-1 win on Wednesday.
The Cavaliers continued their upward trajectory against North Carolina, run-ruling the No. 8 Tar Heels 13-3 in seven innings on Friday.
Due to weather, Saturday’s action became a doubleheader. Max Stammel shut down the Heels again in Game 2, ensuring a 9-2 triumph to give the Hoos the series victory. However, UNC responded in Game 3, wearing Virginia down in a 12-inning thriller 8-7.
Back at Disharoon Park this week, Virginia welcomes William & Mary Tuesday at 4 p.m., before a three-game set with Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
Lacrosse
Women’s lacrosse picked up two wins last week and saw one of its players enter the record books.
The Cavalier were down 3-1 to start its game against No. 21 Pitt, but wrestled control of the game away with seven unanswered goals, holding on to win 10-7. One of the main reasons for the victory as the stellar face-off draw control by midfielder Kate Galica, and she had more heroics in store for Saturday.
Galica finished Saturday with 11 draw-controls against Florida State, putting her first on the all-time list for career draws while taking sole control of the single-game, single-season, and career draw leaderboards. Her incredible performance, which also featured three goals and an assist, was instrumental in earning the Hoos their third ACC victory of the year against the Seminoles 15-7.
Virginia will host Princeton on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Clemson on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, the No. 17 men’s team successfully put their Doyle Smith Cup loss out of sight and out of mind with a 14-7 triumph over High Point on the road last Tuesday. But the Cavaliers fell to Towson at home on Saturday by a score of 13-9.
Next, the ‘Hoos will face rival Maryland on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Golf
The men’s team won Southern Highland Collegiate Invitational last Tuesday, as the Hoos held off Auburn by a single stroke to take the title in Round Three.
Two days into the Hayt in Ponte Vedra, Florida, the Cavaliers sit at 11th place on the team leaderboard going into the final round. But despite the Cavaliers’ struggles as a team, Ben James remains tied for the lead among the individuals, shooting 7-under-par.
The women’s team were also in Florida this past weekend at the Gators Invitational in Gainesville, and the Hoos finished strong on the final day of competition. Virginia was one of two teams under par, shooting –2 under as a team, good for second place behind host Florida. Mira Berglund and Jaclyn LeHa both cracked the top ten, with LeHa in fourth and Berglund tied for second.
Tennis
No. 2 men’s tennis took down No. 48 California 4-1 on Friday as the Hoos made their annual west coast trip. Virginia fared even better against No. 21 Stanford, winning 4-0 on Sunday. The Hoos will host Duke and UNC on Friday and Sunday respectively.
Squash
No. 4 men’s squash and No. 6 Women’s squash competed in the CSA team championships in Philadelphia last week.
The women took out No. 11 Dartmouth in the round of 16 before falling to No. 3 Stanford in the Quarterfinals by a score of 7-2. The Cavaliers barreled through the consolation bracket, reaching the final before falling to Trinity 5-2, ending their season.
Elsewhere, the men fell in an upset to No. 5 Yale 5-4 before dropping the consolation semifinal to No. 8 Princeton 7-2, ending their season.
Wrestling
After falling in round one, Virginia’s Colton Washleski knocked out No. 3 seed Dylan Evans of Pitt in a revenge bout after the Panther who took him down in their regular season meeting last month. Washleski then took third place after besting No. 4 Landon Root of UNC, who had taken him down in Round One. Brenan Morgan also took down Luke Duthie of Stanford to earn a consolation victory at 285.
