Charlottesville, VA (cvillerightnow.com): It is with heavy hearts I inform you Wahoo Rundown Season is nearing its end. With final exams upon us, and ACC tournament play begun or on the doorstep for many teams in the spring sports season, only a few Rundowns for the school year remain! Let’s break down everything that happened this past week, featuring NCAA tournament play for Tennis, record times for Track at the Kehoe Twilight Qualifier, and an ACC title for Men’s Golf!
Men’s Golf earned his first ever ACC title in Bowling Green, Kentucky last weekend thanks to heroics from Paul Chang, Deven Patel, and Bryan Lee. The Hoos bested UNC and the remainder of the field to earn their historic, first conference title. Full Report HERE, after action, Virginia looked set for an excellent seed for the NCAA Tournament coming up, and that was absolutely the case. The Hoos earned the #2 seed in the Reno, Nevada Regional beginning on the 12th of May. They are behind only Texas and are just ahead of Alabama and Duke. The Women’s team is underway at the NCAA Tournament at time of writing; we will update when the first part of competition has concluded.
The NCAA Tournament began over the weekend for both Virginia Tennis Teams right here at home in the Charlottesville Regional.
The Women’s team needed to handle FDU in the first round to start the home team’s action on Friday, and they took to their business comfortably. Virginia left no points available for FDU on the court, as they swept doubles (courtesy of the decorated #3 ranked doubles team in the nation of Collard and Chervinsky), and every Hoos won their singles match to complete the sweep and advance to the second round. They faced Illinois in the second round and despite a little more resistance from their opponents, Virginia took care of the Illini without much trouble. An upset from Megan Heuser to topple #23 ranked Chervinsky was the only singles match Illinois won, and the Hoos triumphed as a team, 4-1. That sets up a battle with Tennessee in the Round of 16 this Friday May 9th beginning at 4:00pm. The Vols beat ELON and Pepperdine to reach this round.
Meanwhile, the Men’s team swept out Bucknell in the first round to advance into second round play against Ivy League opposition in Princeton. Two singles wins against ranked opponents by Virginia stars #4 Rafael Jodar and #32 Dylan Dietrich helped the Hoos to their second sweep of the weekend to power past Princeton 4-0 and march on to the Round of 16. Next Saturday at 1:00pm the Hoos will take on the Arizona Wildcats, who beat Harvard and Denver to reach the quarterfinals.
As for Baseball and Softball, they had midweek action to contend with before heading into a weeklong break for final exams. Softball won a thriller with Liberty on Wednesday by a score of 5-3 to close out their regular season, find a full report HERE.
Baseball took on VCU again on Tuesday and Navy on Wednesday at Disharoon Park. Read about the VCU game HERE, a much closer affair than the Hoos’ run-rule victory at the Diamond back in April, Virginia hung on Tuesday 9-8. Excellent pitching Wednesday against Navy ended the game in under three hours, and the Hoos won again 5-1. Read the full report on the Navy game HERE. Baseball gets back in action this week against Towson Wednesday and play their final three regular season home games of the year this weekend against the Miami Hurricanes. Towson, 18-30 on the year, takes on Richmond Tuesday before coming to Charlottesville on Wednesday. The Towson game begins at 6:00pm and pregame coverage starts at 5:45 at WINA. Miami will play Virginia this weekend at 6:00pm Friday, 4:00pm Saturday, and 1:00pm Sunday. The Hurricanes are 29-18 on the year, coming off a 2-0 series sweep of NC State at home (game three was cancelled). They play FIU midweek before coming to Charlottesville.
Softball will start ACC tournament play on Wednesday against #10 Louisville. The entire tournament will be hosted in Boston beginning Wednesday and lasting till Sunday. The Cardinals ended their regular season 26-24, finishing over .500 courtesy of a sweep of Pitt at home to wrap the year. They beat Virginia earlier in the year as well, winning two games to one at Palmer Park.
Finally, Track and Field was in Durham over the weekend for the Kehoe Twilight. There were a number of excellent, top 10 finishes scattered amongst the Wahoos’ performances. However, the two biggest came from two wins on Friday night. Mark Cyr dominated the Men’s hammer throw with a huge mark of 63.04m to dwarf the field. On the running side, Aidan Cox triumphed in the Men’s 5000m invitational, crossing the line in 14:06. TFXC heads to Lynchburg for the Liberty Twilight Qualifier beginning this Tuesday.
The last bits of news announced over the weekend was the selection for Virginia Women’s Lacrosse in the NCAA Tournament. The #5 Hoos will get to play at home this weekend in first round play. Their first opponents will be LIU beginning Friday at 3:00pm. To conclude, #12 Rowing also begins ACC Championship competition beginning Friday morning at 8:00am in Clemson, South Carolina.
