Charlottesville, VA (cvillerightnow.com): This spring sports season is days away from its end in the 2024-25 UVA Academic Year. Last week, Baseball was playing for a spot in the NCAA Tournament beginning their run in the ACC tournament, and both UVA Golf Teams battled on the west coast for an NCAA title.
We begin in Durham with Virginia Baseball. They ended the regular season with a series win against their archrival Virginia Tech Hokies last weekend in the leadup to ACC tournament action. The Hoos earned the sixth seed in the conference tournament, and after Notre Dame fell in the first nightcap action, Virginia earned a chance for revenge against the Boston College Eagles on Wednesday night. The Eagles came to Disharoon Park in March in the regular season and won two of three against the Hoos, and Virginia was eager for round two following their recent hot streak. After a lengthy delay in action, the Hoos took the field just before 10:30 local time. Despite some titanic homeruns from their sluggers like Henry Ford and Eric Becker, the Eagles flew around the basepaths, chiseling away at Virginia pitching, and using strategic bullpen deployments to keep the Wahoo offense quiet. Despite the Hoos cutting the lead to one late into the game, the comeback effort fell short, and Boston College advanced 12-8. Regardless of the loss, many outlets predicted Virginia would still earn a regional bid in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, news came on Monday that the Hoos were one of the first four teams left out of the regional field, and their 2025 season is now over.
After a great performance at their home regional, the UVA Women’s Golf team had a stellar performance in Stroke Play in the NCAA championships in Carlsbad, California. The Hoos qualified for Match Play for the first time since 2016 and were matched up with top-ranked Stanford. Full report HERE, but the Cardinal were able to survive the NCAA quaterfinal by the skin of their teeth after the Hoos gave the #1 seeded team a fight that lasted until the bitter end, with Stanford winning 3-2. Megan Propeck, Amanda Sambach, and Kennedy Swedick’s playoff heroism will go down in the annals of Cavalier athletic history despite the Hoos defeat. Following a respectable and proud performance in the championships, their season is now over. At time of writing, the Virginia Men’s Golf team has also advanced to Match Play on the same course during their championship action in Carlsbad. We will have updates for you at conclusion of play tomorrow.
Following the Men’s Golf tournament, only Virginia Track and Field and #12 Virginia Rowing remain in action. Rowing is heading to West Windsor, New Jersey this Friday to run in the NCAA Championship Regatta. Track and Field must contend with the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville this weekend before Outdoor Championships on the hallowed track of the University of Oregon in Eugene.
That brings this week’s Rundown to a close, Virginia athletics remains in action for one more week. We wish Virginia Athletes all the best in finishing strong. Let’s Go Hoos!
