Charlottesville, VA (cvillerightnow.com): You can count the remaining Wahoo Rundowns for the 2025 UVA sports season with one hand. Fortunately, however, just like any good sports movie, some of the best drama is saved for the final moments. Last week, we had a heroic series sweep on the Baseball diamond, big victories on the softball field, regional action on the tennis courts and on the Klocker Stadium Lacrosse Field, and Birdwood Golf Course. There is much to catch you up on, let’s get into it!
Going into the weekend, Virginia Baseball sat on the bubble looking in for the NCAA Tournament Selection following the ACC tournament. Their path forward, beyond a deep run in the ACC tournament, looked unclear. What was imperative though, was a series win against the red-hot Miami Hurricanes. Miami entered Disharoon Park on a gargantuan win-streak, losing just two games since the midpoint of April. It was shaping to be an emotional series to celebrate the squadron of Virginia seniors who chose to forgo the MLB draft for one more go-round in Charlottesville. Game one started out strong, and appropriately it was one of those seniors who stepped up to be the hero. Righthander Jay Woolfolk, who got the nod as the Friday starter at the beginning of the year and has dominated at home all season long, shut the vaunted Miami offense down with a six-inning, one-run, seven strikeout performance. The offense backed him up to help get the win over the line, with Harrison Didawick and Luke Hanson leading the way. Both lefties went deep off Miami ace Griffin Hugus to power the Hoos to a 6-1 victory over the Canes in game one. Miami came out swinging against the Hoos in game two, charging out to a 8-3 advantage after a 6-run fourth inning. Virginia hit the halfway point of the game and stormed back to within one run going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Didawick stepped to the plate and barreled a ball up, sending it into the Charlottesville skies to tie up the game. After James Nunnalee reached, sparkplug leadoff man Aidan Teel’s RBI single won the game for Virginia, sealing the seven-run comeback, 10-9, thus winning the series for Virginia. Going for the sweep and their sixth-straight victory Sunday, stepping into the spotlight was star sophomore slugger Henry Ford. Ford hammered two homeruns over the Disharoon Fence, along with a booming double, to total four RBIs for the day. Those four runs gave young, powerful, lefty Tomas Valincius the security he needed to start the game with the necessary sharpness, going 6.1 innings and striking out seven. The Virginia pen did the rest, holding off the Hurricanes 8-6 for the sweep. Alex Markus, Blake Barker, Dean Kampschror, Jacob Ference, Jay Woolfolk, Matthew Buchanan, Matt Lanzendorfer, and Wes Arrington were all honored before the game in a senior day celebration. One final homegame remains for the Hoos before the regular season ends. The George Mason Patriots will come to town on Tuesday night at 6:00pm. It’s been a good year for Mason, going 35-17 on the year, 19-8 in the Atlantic 10, and coming off a road series victory against the Davidson Wildcats. The regular season will end for Virginia against their archrivals, Virginia Tech, in the final regular season points on offer for the Commonwealth Clash. Action begins Thursday evening at 6:00pm, followed by 3:00pm first pitch on Friday, and 1:00pm first pitch on Saturday. Tech is 29-22 on the year, they will face Marshall this Tuesday at 6:00 before welcoming the Hoos to English Field. They have not won a conference series since the beginning of April against Notre Dame but are coming off a two-game series sweep of the Mercer Bears this past weekend. The Hoos stand, at present, in sixth place in the conference, now four games over .500 in the ACC. ACC tournament play begins next Tuesday.
Softball began ACC tournament play on Wednesday in Boston, taking on a team they lost too in the regular season, the Louisville Cardinals. The game was dramatic, with the Cardinals getting out to an early lead, but the Hoos fought back and won the game in the final frame thanks to a Kelly Ayer RBI double. You can find a full report on the game HERE. The win against Louisville set up a date with the Clemson Tigers in the ACC quarterfinal for Thursday. The battle of 2 vs 7 went the way of the higher seed as the Tigers dispatched the Hoos 7-4 to end the Virginia run before it really got going. The Tigers scored first in the fourth inning, before Virginia responded by loading the bases and taking a 2-1 lead with a two-rbi single thanks to slugging shortstop Jade Hylton. Clemson answered in kind with a homerun of their own in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. A Macee Eaton homerun in the very next frame allowed Virginia to take control back, which was the new single season record mark for RBIs in a season, lucky #59. Clemson was undeterred, and again shoved Virginia off the hill, and a Taylor Pipkins grand slam turned out to be the killing blow. The game ended 7-4. Despite the tournament defeat, Virginia was announced as the 2nd seed in the Columbia Regional of the 2025 NCAA Softball tournament. They will take on North Florida at 3:00pm on Friday, followed by ELON battling the hosts, South Carolina.
Virginia Women’s Lacrosse, after a stellar season, earned regional hosting duties in the NCAA tournament this past weekend. Klockner Stadium was buzzing on Friday, and the #5 seeded Cavaliers delighted the home fans with a dramatic and dominant victory over LIU by a score of 20-6. A single game record was set by second-year attacker Madison Alaimo, whose total of nine signaled a long day for the LIU defense. Alaimo had six in the first half alone and finished the game with two goals as well. Her classmates Jenna DiNardo and Kate Galica each added four more goals for a total of eight between them. Second-year attacker Addie Foster added three more for her 10th hat trick of the season. Triumph in such a resounding fashion gave the Hoos plenty of momentum going into their second-round matchup with Duke. Unfortunately, it ended in heartbreak for the home team against the Blue Devils. The defense had no answers for Duke attackers Callie Hem and Bella Goodwin, who put up 13 goals between them, on the way to a 17-9 victory for the Blue Devils. Duke moves on, and that ends the season for Virginia Women’s Lacrosse.
The Charlottesville Regional for both the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournaments resumed from the Virginia Tennis Center at the Boar’s Head Resort. The Women’s Team took to the court first against the Tennesee Lady Volunteers. The Vols took the doubles point to take an early lead and, as it turned out, spelled doom for the Hoos. Vanessa Suarez and #41 Catherine Aulia earned early wins for the visitors despite spirited Virginia opposition from Karolina Kozakova and #34 Annaebelle Xu. #27 Sara Ziodato was the last hope for the Hoos but unfortunately, she went up against #7 Elza Tomase, and fell 6-1 6-3, ending Virginia’s season. On Saturday, the Men’s team had Arizona to deal with fighting for a chance at the Quarterfinals. Virginia took care of business early to earn the Doubles point, followed by Keegan Rice and James Hopper each earning victories to give the Hoos the lead. #5 Colton Smith took down the much vaunted #4 Rafael Jodar in the upset to get the Cats on the board, and Filip Gustafsson shut down Jangjun Kim to make the quite interesting. It was up to #32 Dylan Dietrich, who was down early to #6 Jay Friend. Dietrich buckled down and fired his way to an upset to wrap up the match for Virginia. That sets up a quarterfinal’s matchup with the #2 TCU Horn Frogs in Waco, Texas. The match begins this Friday at 5:00pm eastern on ESPN+.
The Cavalier Women’s Golf team hosted the Charlottesville Regional in the Women’s Golf team as well in the early part of last week. Virginia finished in 5th the first two days at Birdwood, full report HERE on day one’s action. Going into the final day they needed to hold their place or do slightly better to punch a ticket to Carlsbad, California for the NCAA Championships beginning this Friday. They finished the final day of competition tied for third with a 6-over-290 finish, just above the University of South Carolina. This will be the fourth straight visit to the NCAA championships for the Women’s Golf Team. We will have updates for you from their progress on next week’s Wahoo Rundown.
To conclude, Virginia Track and Field finished up its regular season at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier in Lynchburg. They are set for ACC Championships in Winston-Salem beginning this Thursday. Men’s Golf is in regional play out in Reno, Nevada and have just wrapped up their first day of competition, play continues in Reno until Wednesday. #12 Virginia Rowing also commences ACC championship action this weekend, they start this Friday morning from Clemson, South Carolina.
That wraps up the Rundown! We will see you right here next week and Go Hoos!
