Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): We are firmly in crossover season on the Wahoo Rundown, Football has three games left, Soccer is playing in the ACC tournament, Field Hockey is headed to the NCAA tournament, while Basketball and Wrestling have gotten out of the blocks to begin their season.  There are all sorts of sports on in the month of November among UVA athletics, and this is your one stop shop for all of it.  Let’s run it down on Veterans Day, 2024.

First up, as always, we begin with Football.  The team needed a win badly to salvage their chances at bowl eligibility after the shock defeat to North Carolina, and the #23 ranked Pitt Panthers were an unlikely opponent the Hoos would get it from.  However, Tony Elliot and company proved the doubters wrong and won a 24-19 victory at Acrisure Stadium.  You can find Jay James’ full report on the game HERE.  Up next however, are the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.  The Irish started out slow but have found their form when it matters most and will be dangerous at home coming off a 52-3 victory at Florida State last time out.  That game is this Saturday at 3:30 PM on NBC, as well as Newsradio WINA on your radio dial.

Also under pressure was interim head coach Ron Sanchez and the UVA Men’s Basketball team, playing their first game without Tony Bennett.  Their opponents were the Campbell University Camels.  Much to the delight of the John Paul Jones Arena crowd, the Hoos won their 2024-25 opener, 65-56 over Campbell.  Jay James’ full report on the game can be found HERE. The Hoos take to the court again tonight at the time of writing, against the Coppin State Eagles at 7:00 PM at John Paul Jones Arena on ACCNX.  The Eagles are 0-3, losing 63-54 to Rider last time out.

Women’s Basketball had a tough task waiting for them after beating American on Monday, you can find my report on that game in last week’s Wahoo Rundown HERE.  The 10th ranked Oklahoma Sooners proved a bit too much to handle for Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton and her team, and they ran out 95-51 winners in Norman on Friday evening.  Jay James’ report on that game can be found HERE.  The Hoos take on the Highlanders of Radford on Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM at JPJ, that game will be broadcast on ACCNX and Newsradio WINA.  The Highlanders are 1-2, coming off a heartbreaking 55-53 loss to Western Carolina in their last game.

Both Volleyball and Men’s Soccer earned two huge victories last week.  Volleyball remains in regular season action, but they had two matches in a rough against the Virginia Tech Hokies.  The Hoos, in the midst of a historic year, had important Commonwealth Clash points to play for in both their Wednesday match at home and their Friday match at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, and I am pleased to report they won both.   A report of Wednesday’s five set classic victory can be found HERE, and one on Friday’s away three set sweep of the Hokies can be found HERE.  Volleyball has #6 Stanford, coming off a sweep of Georgia Tech, and Cal, coming of a sweep at Clemson, up next this Friday at Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 PM.  As for Men’s Soccer, they played two matches in the ACC tournament in which they were both classified as underdogs.  On Wednesday they entered as the ninth seed against eighth seeded NC State.  The Hoos put two past the pack to upset them and earn a chance to play the one seeded Pitt Panthers in Pennsylvania on Friday.  Lightning does in fact strike twice, as two more quick goals and another clean sheet have sent the Hoos through to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the ACC tournament semifinals.  The Deacons just beat the SMU Mustangs on penalties last time out and drew 1-1 against the Hoos in their last meeting with UVA on September 13th.  My full reports on NC State can be found HERE, and Pitt HERE.

Wrapping up the action, Wrestling won a dual match on the deck of an aircraft carrier against The Citadel in Charleston, full report HERE.  ITA sectionals concluded for UVA Women’s Tennis and three more Hoos are headed to Waco for the NCAA Championships in one week’s time, full report HERE.  UVA Field Hockey had its NCAA tournament bid confirmed after its defeat in the ACC tournament against Syracuse, full report HERE, as they’ll play in the Northwestern Regional, with their first match against #2 Michigan this Friday at 1:00 PM eastern.  Michigan is 15-4 in the regular season.   UVA Rowing won all three races at the Rivanna Romp on Sunday, the Varisty Four, Eight, and Novice Eight all belonged to the hosts.  The Varsity Eight completed the 4,000 meter course in a total time of 13:26.6.

That’s your Wahoo rundown for the week of November 11th, take every opportunity you can to support the Hoos!
