CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – October is upon us across the many athletic disciplines of NCAA Fall Sports. Most sports are in the thick of conference play in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with some teams losing early momentum while others have heated up at just the right time. Let’s take a look around Grounds and examine the state of UVA Athletics in the tenth month of 2024.

UVA Football is on a bye week, currently 3-1 on the year following their victory against Coastal Carolina last Saturday. The team is gearing up for Boston College this Saturday. The Eagles are 4-1 after their victory against Western Kentucky but will be without their star quarterback, Thomas Castellanos, when they face the Cavaliers on Homecoming Weekend in Charlottesville.

Field Hockey played two matches over the weekend, facing the #9 Duke Blue Devils and the Tribe of William and Mary. The Hoos were well-matched on the road against Duke, and despite their offensive struggles, they played cohesively and cleanly to hold the Devils scoreless, helping Tyler Kennedy keep a clean sheet. After outshooting the Devils 8-4, Mia Abello scored her second goal of the year in the 50th minute, giving the Hoos a 1-0 victory and advancing their record to 8-0. Back home on Sunday, UVA outshot the Tribe 29-2 and secured a 4-0 win. Taryn Tkachuk scored in the first quarter, and the Hoos added three more goals in the final eight minutes of the first half. Their next challenge will be against Boston College this Friday, October 4th, at 4:30 PM. The Eagles are 7-2, coming off a 1-0 victory against Louisville. UVA will return to Charlottesville on Sunday, October 6th, for a noon matchup against Louisville.

UVA Volleyball opened ACC play against Wake Forest on the road last Friday night. After a slow start, the Hoos dropped the first two sets but rallied to win the match 3-2. Unfortunately, their momentum was halted on Sunday against NC State, where they fell 3-1. UVA will face #18 Florida State this Friday and #25 Miami on Sunday in hopes of bouncing back.

UVA Soccer had a tough weekend. The #19-ranked Women’s team fell 3-2 to #4 UNC in Chapel Hill, despite leading twice. Maggie Cagle scored an early penalty, and Yuna McCormack gave the Hoos a 2-1 lead, but UNC came back to win the match. The Hoos, now 8-3, will face Duke on Thursday, October 3rd. The Men’s team faced #2 Stanford at home and fought hard but ultimately lost 1-0 after a red card in the 73rd minute. They will face UNCG this evening at 7:00 PM.

In other UVA sports news, Cross Country, Tennis, and Golf teams are also in action, with events taking place this weekend. Lastly, the Blue and White Scrimmages for Men’s and Women’s Basketball will be held this Saturday night at the John Paul Jones Arena, providing the first look at both squads in game situations. The scrimmages begin at 6:00 PM, and admission is free.
