CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- For the seventh year in a row, the ACC Swimming & Diving Championship went the way of Virginia, as the women’s team triumphed in Atlanta over the weekend, putting up 1,410.5 points, besting second-place Stanford, which managed 1,039.
Claire Curzan was named Swimmer of the Meet as her two individual victories, the 100 backstroke and an American record swim in the 200 back, were instrumental in helping secure the victory for the Wahoos. The men’s team finished seventh with three podium finishes, including two by David King. The sophomore notched gold in the 200 back and put down a strong leg in the 400 free relay, in which the ‘Hoos finished 3rd.
Basketball
Women’s basketball earned an impressive 74-72 victory on the road against No. 8 Louisville on Sunday afternoon to help solidify their NCAA Tournament hopes. Romy Levy hit the game winner with only thirteen seconds left on the clock after the ‘Hoos spent the fourth quarter weathering a storm of Louisville offense that put the outcome of the game in doubt despite the Cardinals leading for just under four minutes in the game. The victory was Virginia’s eleventh in conference play and sets up two crucial final contests against No. 22 UNC and Virginia Tech, both at home, for the Hoos to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
Softball
It was a special weekend for coach Joanna Hardin and her squad, as the Hoos went undefeated in the Mizuno Classic at Palmer Park in Charlottesville, ringing in the 300th career win for Hardin. The No. 21 ‘Hoos took down Maryland 5-4 and Ohio State 8-4 on Friday before finishing strong on Saturday with a triumph over the Buckeyes 8-0 in five innings and a 5-0 win over Delaware. This week, Virginia heads back down to Longwood to face the Lancers in a game that was postponed due to weather earlier in February. The Cavaliers will then come home to host Michigan, Bucknell and Villanova in the Palmer Park Classic.
Baseball
Baseball continued its strong start to the 2026 season with a win against VMI on Tuesday evening, in a grind-out pitchers’ duel that finished 5-2 in Virginia’s favor. Following the home win, the Hoos headed to Florida for three games on the campus of Stetson. They run-ruled Monmouth 21-8 on Friday before falling to the Hatters 6-5 in a Saturday night contest. The Cavaliers finished the weekend with a 5-4 squeaker against North Dakota State. This week, the Hoos face George Washington University at Disharoon Park Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m., before hosting a home-in-home against VCU this weekend.
Lacrosse
After taking a tough defeat against Richmond the previous weekend, men’s lacrosse took down Stony Brook 19-7 on Saturday in a bounce-back game for this new-look core. Next, the annual Doyle Cup matchup with John Hopkins will also serve as the ‘Hoos’ return to Klöckner Stadium this season after their originally scheduled home opener against Colgate was moved to the Lower Turf Field earlier this month. First face-off is set for Saturday 3 p.m.
As for the women’s team, the Hoos faced two road tests after starting the season 0-3. UVA doubled up Liberty 17-8 on Wednesday before facing No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Irish proved difficult, but the ‘Hoos triumphed in a hard-fought win, 9-7. They will look to carry their momentum into a matchup against No. 2 Stanford in the One Love Game at Klöckner on Saturday at noon.
More Action
Wrestling was shut out on the road against Pitt 37-0 on Friday. That brought the regular season to a close for the Cavaliers, and they will next head to the ACC Championships in Blacksburg, Va. on Sunday, March 8.
Men’s tennis fell to Ohio State again, this time in the ITA Indoor semifinals in Dallas by a score of 4-2. The Hoos will return home to face Boston College in ACC play on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Women’s tennis put in one of this year’s more impressive showings in the Commonwealth Clash last Wednesday, keeping the Hokies off the scoreboard completely in a 7-0 rout. The ‘Hoos followed it up with a strong win against No. 23 SMU 4-1 on Sunday.
Women’s golf finished 16th of 17 at the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Fla. last Tuesday.
Both squash teams fell to Trinity College’s Top 5 men’s and women’s squash teams on Saturday. The men’s team lost 7-2, while the women lost 5-4.
Track & field put in strong showings at the VT Challenge in Blacksburg, the ASICS Last Chance Invitational in Winston-Salem, and the Saucony for Boston to end the regular season. The ACC Indoor Championships begin Thursday in Boston.
