CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A new addition to Charlottesville’s wine scene is making waves for both its mission and its menu. The Virginia Wine Collective, located at 1585 Avon Street Extended, has taken over the former Michael Shaps Wineworks tasting room and transformed it into a space that supports small-scale wine producers. “They’ve figured out a way to enable smaller wine makers to get their product directly to consumers,” said Simon Davidson of Charlottesville29, highlighting the collective’s unique ability to cut through licensing red tape and provide a home for rising talent in the local wine industry.
Davidson applauded the Virginia wine community’s collaborative nature, calling it “one big wine family.” The new space was built with support from seasoned winemaker Jake Bushing of Eastwood Farm and Winery, who has mentored many of the featured producers. The venue offers both bottle and glass service from multiple small wineries, many of whom wouldn’t otherwise have a storefront.
But it’s not just about wine. The food is also drawing attention thanks to Chef Andrew Partridge, who was formerly at Marigold, who along with his brother, is bringing top-tier dishes to the wine bar. Davidson didn’t hesitate to call it “ridiculously good.” Add strong air conditioning to the mix, and as Davidson put it, “It’s got everything,” for a summer afternoon outing.
