CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Virginia Department of Forestry reports suppressing 437 wildfires during the spring fire season February 15 through April 30 this year that burned more than 8100 acres and destroyed 66 structures, including 22 homes. Their suppression efforts are credited with saving 426 homes and 304 structures at a value of some $79-million. That compares to more fires than the 328 last year, but last year’s 19,440 acres burned was much more than this year. Escaped debris burns were once again the leading cause of wildfires this spring.
