RICHMOND, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – The Virginia National Guard (VNG) is redeploying resources to Southwest Virginia, mobilizing approximately 30 additional soldiers to assist with storm response. The troops will operate chain saw teams to clear debris and use heavy-duty tactical vehicles to navigate deep snow or high water. Two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters equipped with rescue hoists are also on alert.

A team of about 15 soldiers already stationed in the region will remain in place to support ongoing operations. By the evening of Feb. 13, a total of 45 personnel and equipment will be deployed in the area. This shift comes as VNG teams previously staged in Warrenton, Bowling Green, and Rocky Mount stand down.

Brig. Gen. Todd H. Hubbard, VNG Director of the Joint Staff, emphasized the Guard’s critical role in emergency response. “Our Soldiers quickly and safely moved to their staging locations on very short notice so they are ready to assist when the winter weather hits,” Hubbard said.

The Virginia Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (HART), composed of VNG helicopter crews and Chesterfield Fire & EMS rescue technicians, remains ready for aerial rescue missions. Additional soldiers and members of the Virginia Defense Force are supporting logistics and mission command operations from the VNG’s Joint Force Headquarters in Richmond.

Localities needing assistance must request support through the Virginia Emergency Support Team. The VNG last mobilized in January to provide water distribution support in Richmond and to prepare for winter weather statewide.
