RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Virginia National Guard (VNG) is getting ready to help Richmond with the current water crisis as the area prepares for more severe winter weather. On January 8, 2025, the VNG will provide six portable bulk water storage tanks, commonly called “Hippos,” to the city. The Hippo is a 2,000-gallon potable water system with a pump that can deliver 125 gallons per minute. It’s designed for easy transport by military vehicles, even when full. About 15 Soldiers will manage the tanks and trucks, moving them to locations designated by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management starting January 9. At the same time, around 50 VNG personnel will be stationed along the I-95 and Route 29 corridors to help with the expected impact of more snow and ice on the roads.
