Virginia McClenny Sullivan, of NuArk Farm in Albemarle County, Virginia, died peacefully on July 2, 2024, at the Martha Jefferson House in Charlottesville. Born on May 2, 1926, in Suffolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of Jesse David McClenny and Virgie Holland McClenny. Virginia, known affectionately as Ginny, led a life marked by love, faith, and dedication to her family and community.
Ginny was a graduate of Suffolk High School, where she was salutatorian of the class of 1944. She continued her education at Hollins College. On November 11, 1956, she married Robert Bruce Sullivan of Helena, Arkansas, and together they shared 51 years of profound happiness.
Ginny is survived by her son, Robert Bruce Sullivan, Jr., and his wife Leslie Bradford Sullivan of Charlottesville; grandchildren Robert McClenny Sullivan of Charleston, SC, Elizabeth Sullivan Soethe of Miami, FL, and Laura Clements Sullivan Young and her husband Henry Coulter Young of Charlottesville; and a great-grandson James Bradford Young. Also surviving is a dear cousin, David Hamilton Britt of Carrollton, Va. Ginny was pre deceased by her sister, Anne McClenny Krauss of Roanoke, Va.
Throughout her life, Ginny was deeply involved with her church. She was a dedicated member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roanoke, where she taught Sunday School and served on several committees. In Charlottesville, at Christ Episcopal Church, she served on the Altar Guild and was actively involved with the Episcopal Church Women, serving as President of ECW in Region 15 of the Diocese of Virginia.
Ginny’s passions extended beyond her church work. She was a member of the Jack Jouette chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Blue Ridge Committee of the Colonial Dames of America.
Known for her warmth and generosity, Ginny was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She instilled in her family a love of faith, community, and the natural world. Ginny cherished time spent by the sea, at the beach, and in the mountains. She particularly enjoyed fishing and crabbing outings.
