CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia’s General Assembly will be back for a special session in June to finalize a budget to send to Gov. Abigail Spanberger, but the two houses won’t return at the same time.

The House of Delegates will open a special session on June 18, Del. Katrina Callsen and Amy Laufer told Cville Right Now on Friday. But the Senate won’t come back until June 22, Sen. Creigh Deeds said.

The General Assembly adjourned on March 14 after a busy and testy session that saw Spanberger, a Democrat, vetoed 31 bills sent to her by the Democrat-controlled GA. At that point, the General Assembly had not yet passed a state budget.

“Absolutely optimistic,” Laufer said. “We know our charge is June 30. I feel very optimistic. … There will be a budget and I know it’s priorities are going to be around affordability and education.”

One key stumbling block on a budget deal is a debate over a tax credit of more than $1 billion for data centers.

“I think there’s definitely going to be some discussion around that,” Laufer said. “We will be talking about that. … This was a very small industry and now it’s a much larger industry. Its impacts are being felt on a wide range of areas and I think it has to be revisited. And I’m sure it will be.”
