CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)  – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is investigating an E. coli outbreak linked to the Lake Anna area over Memorial Day weekend. The infection has caused severe gastrointestinal symptoms in numerous people, primarily children, some of whom have been hospitalized. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and chills, with a risk of organ damage in severe cases.

Dr. Olugbenga O. Obasanjo, Health Director for the Rappahannock Health District, says the investigation the investigation into the exact source is ongoing. While all affected individuals had water exposure at Lake Anna, the VDH is conducting water tests to determine bacterial levels and potential health risks. There is no current evidence linking the illnesses to Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).

The VDH advises caution when swimming, recommending measures like showering before and after swimming, washing hands before eating, avoiding drinking lake water, and not swimming if experiencing diarrhea. Visitors to natural waters should avoid untreated water, swimming with open wounds, and areas with green film, which may indicate harmful algae.

If you visited Lake Anna and experienced symptoms you should contact your local health department and seek medical care if needed.

Updates will be provided as the investigation continues, with patient privacy maintained.
