CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Democrat Abigail Spanberger and Republic Winsome Earle-Sears, the candidates running to be Virginia’s next governor, will meet in a debate tonight at Norfolk State University.

But that debate – the only one between the two nominees scheduled before next month’s election – won’t be televised in the Charlottesville market.

The 7 p.m. debate is being aired exclusively on Nexstar television stations, and the company does not have any channels in Charlottesville.

WAVY-TV 10 in Norfolk is televising the debate and it will also air on Nexstar stations in Richmond, Roanoke, Washington D.C. and Tri-Cities, Tenn., allowing it to reach a potential audience of 4-million viewers.

But voters in Charlottesville will only be able to access the debate, and the station’s pre- and post-debate coverage, via streaming. The debate can be viewed at Wavy.com or on the Wavy-plus app, available on Firestick, Roku and the latest Samsung smart televisions, WAVY news director Kathy Stone told Cville Right Now on Thursday morning.

The debate will also be archived on the station’s website and, eventually, on its YouTube channel.

Charlottesville has two television stations – NBC29, owned by Gray Television, and CBS19, owned by Lockwood Broadcast Group.

Stone did not believe either station had inquired with Nexstar about simulcasting this year’s debate.

The debate will be moderated by news anchors Tom Schaad of WAVY and Deanna Allbrittin of Richmond’s WRIC-TV.
