CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – To the surprise of the majority of Wahoo Nation, the University of Virginia, having been to back to back College World Series appearances was not chosen as a part of the 64 team field in 2025. Virginia closed the season with two impressive series wins including a sweep of the Miami Hurricanes and a 2-1 series win on the road against the Hokies of Virginia Tech. However, with every game down the stretch of the last few weeks of the season having “playoff” level importance, the Cavaliers did not play well in their lone ACC Tournament game losing to then 27-28 Boston College. Despite the loss, UVA at 32-18 still had relative confidence that based on their body of work, how they finished the year winning 12 of their last 15 games, finishing five games above .500 in the talented ACC conference at 16-11 and they were only 1.5 games out of a first place finish in the league.
However, the lack of the traditional strength of the league did end up hurting UVA’s resume, as only 3 of the top 16 national seeds are from the ACC, while the SEC got a record 13 teams in the tournament. ESPN reported that Virginia was one of the first four teams out, along with Southern Louisiana, Troy and UCONN. It is the first time Virginia has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2019, and the Hoos are left to reflect on a season of missed opportunities as they began the year ranked #2 in the nation. UVA Head Coach Brian O’Connor will speak with the media on Tuesday afternoon, and WINA will air those comments during Tuesday’s edition of the ‘Best Seat in the House’ which airs weekdays from 5pm to 7pm on WINA.
