Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – On a winter morning marked by heavy snowfall and icy roads, Sharon Ketcham, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), joined Morning News to deliver essential updates on road conditions and safety measures. Her remarks highlighted the extensive work her team was doing, and the role public cooperation plays in their efforts.

“750 pieces of equipment out on the roadways right now, and we are round-the-clock treating those roads and clearing snow, and sleet, and ice,” Ketcham shared, emphasizing the sheer scale of VDOT’s operation. Despite their continuous work, the treacherous mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain created hazardous conditions, with black ice hidden beneath deceptive stretches of pavement.

Ketcham stressed the importance of staying off the roads unless absolutely necessary. She delivered her key advice: “Unless it’s an emergency, we advise stay home. That’s our best advice.” Avoiding unnecessary travel will help VDOT crews work more efficiently, contributing to improved road safety for everyone. Sharon’s closing words highlighted the collective effort required to manage such challenging conditions. “We appreciate more than anybody can know when people heed that and stay home.”
