Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Sharon Ketcham, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in the Culpeper District, joined Morning News to provide updates on the response to the recent winter storm. While major routes were now mostly passable, Ketcham urged drivers to remain cautious, highlighting lingering icy spots, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
“In the end, Mother Nature’s going to win,” Ketcham remarked when discussing the challenges posed by sub-freezing temperatures in the aftermath of the storm. Although VDOT utilizes advanced methods like chemical treatments and salt to mitigate icy conditions, the process of fully restoring road safety requires patience and public cooperation.
VDOT’s efforts have extended beyond primary routes as crews shift focus to secondary roads and residential areas. Ketcham emphasized that safety remains a priority, advising motorists to check the VA511 website for real-time updates and to allow extra travel time. She also expressed gratitude to the hardworking teams braving harsh conditions to ensure public safety, stating, “Kudos to all of our crews out on those roadways throughout the evening.”
Despite the challenges, progress was evident. As conditions improved, Ketcham reassured listeners that VDOT’s commitment to road safety would remain steadfast until all routes were fully cleared.
