STAUNTON (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – With some 65 projects worth some $3-billion underway, VDOT is not done listening for your input on the I-81 Corridor Improvement Plan, by a long shot. Engineers, project managers, and other operatives are analyzing the entire 325-miles of I-81 through Virginia and this first phase is identifying safety and congestion issues along the corridor. VDOT Staunton District’s Ken Slack says this is similar to an effort in 2018 from which the current projects happening right now are being done, and they’re looking for input as they look at other projects that include over the next several years adding lanes completely to the corridor. Slack says the feedback they’re seeking now through April 15 helps determine whether recent traffic-data analysis aligns with drivers’ experience while traveling along the corridor. The public engagement period includes a survey with an interactive map that allows the public to pinpoint locations where they experience issues.

You can click here for the survey, which has a translation tool for multiple languages. You can also email comments to “va81corridorplan@vdot.virginia.gov”, or postal mail to Robert J. Williams, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1401 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219.

The next phase of the study will use traffic data and the online survey results to develop recommendations for improving areas identified during the first phase. The study team will seek input from the public on these recommendations at in-person meetings this summer and fall to further refine them, with the full study expected to be completed by the end of the year.
