Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – UVA’s athletic department is making waves in college sports funding, with new estimates placing them 14th among public Power 5 schools in NIL collective support. Dr. Bobby Chhabra, Chair of UVA Orthopedics, provided insights into the university’s funding landscape during an interview on WINA Morning News.
Dr. Chhabra noted, “Texas is number one at 22 million, Ohio State is number 2 at 20 million, but UVA is12.7 million, ranked 14th in the country.” When discussing a recent multimillion-dollar donation, Dr. Chhabra said, “If this is a one-time gift… It may put us in the running for a year, but you still have to compete against schools that have this level of collective or higher every year… it’s just automatic for some of these schools in Texas, Ohio State, they probably have 20-25 million that’s automatic.” He stressed the importance of stable, long-term financial support to maintain competitiveness with schools that boast higher annual NIL funding.
As UVA continues to invest in its athletic programs, there’s a clear commitment to elevating its presence in college sports’ competitive landscape. These investments reflect a professional-level commitment to transforming college athletics into a business-oriented environment, where financial support directly impacts recruitment, team performance, and overall success.
