CHARLOTTESVILLE (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Former longtime University of Virginia President John Casteen has died at age 81 after a brief pancreatic cancer battle.
Casteen led UVA from 1990 before retiring in 2010, serving longer than any other UVA President other than the first… Edwin Alderman. He led the growth of the endowment during his tenure from $481-million to $5.1-billion as state funding kept dwindling.
President Jim Ryan said. “As president, he transformed UVA into a world-class university. As a teacher, mentor, colleague and friend, he was beloved.”
A small service for family and friends will be held at Grace Church in Keswick, with a public memorial at the University later this spring. Click here for the entire UVA announcement.
