CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): The UVA Women’s soccer team is out of the blocks with their first win of the season. Yesterday evening, the Hoos beat Towson 2-0 in front of 1,110 fans.
UVA started on the front foot, firing 6 shots on the Towson goal in the first third of the game, before 4th year midfielder Laughlin Ryan found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career. It was a special moment for Ryan, who had not seen action for the Hoos due to injury until last season.
Also seeing action for the first time in a long time was midfielder Lia Godfrey, who missed out on the 2023 season due to injury after 8 goals and 5 assists in 2022. The Hoos kept the pressure on in the second half, with the opposition forced to foul to stop the attack.
In the 84th minute, that approach cost the Towson defense. Maggie Cagle drew a penalty and coolly slotted it home to double the Hoos’ advantage. That’s where the score would stay as UVA wrapped up their first win of the year.
The Hoos take to the pitch again this Sunday at 1pm against Northwestern.
A canned food collection will take place, with the first 100 fans to donate a can receiving a $5 concession voucher for use at Klockner Stadium.
