CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The University of Virginia is facing criticism for withholding the degrees of four graduating 4th years who were involved in protests on May 4th. These students were among the eleven students who were arrested and are now facing internal disciplinary charges from the university’s judiciary committee.
Despite the initial charges of trespassing being set for dismissal and the university dropping no trespass orders, the students remain in limbo. UVA Professor Laura Goldblatt highlighted the university’s handling of the situation, stating, “It’s clear that none of these students are a threat to the UVA community and that they were using their constitutionally protected right to protest.”
Goldblatt emphasized the need for a swift resolution, noting the additional stress and uncertainty this situation places on the students. Faculty members continue to advocate for the students, seeking a fair and timely resolution.
