Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): The ITA Atlantic Regional Finals came to an end yesterday at the Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville, and it was a banner finish for the Women of the UVA Tennis Team. The last day of competition featured both the singles and doubles final of the event, and the Cavaliers were well represented. In the doubles battle, UVA seniors Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky, who won four matches in as many days as a team, took on two of their teammates, sophomore Meggie Navarro and grad student Sara Ziodato. Collard and Chervinsky won in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). Navarro and Ziodato earned a spot in NCAA sectionals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina November 7th through the 10th. A good finish there will then allow them to advance to Waco, Texas for the championships the following week. By contrast, Collard and Chervinsky, with their victory, advanced to Waco. Ziodato, for her part, will be headed to Texas regardless of her doubles finish, as even though she was defeated in straight sets in the singles final by Ozlem Uslu of Virginia Tech (7-5, 6-1), she earned her place as her runner-up in the singles draw. The Sectionals field will be announced by the NCAA soon, and in the singles draw, will likely include Chervinsky and UVA junior Annabelle Xu, who finished fourth and third in the singles draw respectively.
