PARIS, FRANCE (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – UVA senior Gretchen Walsh, expected to have an Olympic debut laden with silverware, is off and running with a pair of silver medals in two events into her busy Paris schedule. Her competition began as part of the 4×100 freestyle team that included UVA alumna Kate Douglas. That team won silver on Saturday, putting up a time of 3:30.20, just behind an Australian team consisting of four individual medal favorites.

On Sunday, Walsh took to the pool again in the event for which she holds the world record time after the Olympic Trials in Indianapolis last month, the 100-meter butterfly. Her main competition was Stanford standout and Arlington, Virginia native Torri Huske. Walsh was the heavy favorite after her world record swim and finished with a time of 55.63, good for an Olympic Record. However, Huske beat her to the line, winning gold with a time of 55.59, a difference of just 0.04 seconds.

Walsh is back in action in the individual freestyle events, looking to go for gold in both the 100-meter and 50-meter freestyle finals. Both Gretchen’s sister, Alex, and Kate Douglass will be in action in the 200-meter IM, which many predict will be a crucial victory for the USA to ensure they top their main rival, Australia, in the overall medal table.
