CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The University of Virginia Thursday announced suspension of the student-run University Guide Service from giving tours of the Rotunda, Lawn, and Grounds. A video posted for several years on social media involves students talking about the benefits of the service, some saying they get a chance to tell stories they feel are important. Others say their stories help those taking the tours find their community in the University of Virginia.
The conservative Jefferson Council has criticized the guides of failing to “sell” the University, and claims they provide “a woke version of UVA history”. Bacon’s Rebellion blogs about a woman who claims to have been a University Guide 25 years ago who said the guide was negative and apologized for Thomas Jefferson using slave labor to build the Grounds. However, spokesman Brian Coy denied the criticism is the reason for the suspension, saying instead they’re concerned about not enough guides to operate the required number of tours, and that information they’re giving is not consistent.
