CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – On Friday, May 31, a judge in Albemarle County Circuit Court approved a $9 million settlement between the University of Virginia and the families of of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry, who were killed in the November 13, 2022, shooting on the university’s grounds. Two other students, Mike Hollins and Marlee Morgan, were injured in the incident.
The settlement allocates $2 million each to the families of the students—D’Sean Perry, Devin Chandler, and Lavel Davis Jr.—and $3 million total to the injured students, Mike Hollins and Marlee Morgan.
“This is a significant step toward closure for the victims’ families and the university,” remarked UVA Rector Robert Hardie.
Police say Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a UVA student and former football team member, opened fire near a parking garage on the grounds after returning from a field trip to Washington, D.C.
The incident led to a 12-hour lockdown on the grounds until Jones was taken in custody.
Following the shooting, an external review was conducted to examine UVA’s safety policies, response to the incident, and previous threat assessments of Jones.
At a press conference held after the settlement was finalized, family members demanded that UVA release the independent report on the incident. Attorney Kimberly Wald, from the Miami-based Haggard Law firm, represents the estate of D’Sean Perry, as well as Marlee Morgan and Mike Hollins.
Listen as family members join Wald to share what they have been through since the shooting happened, and why they won’t stop searching for answers:
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and state Attorney General Jason Miyares approved the agreements prior to the court’s final approval on Friday.
In 2023, the charges against Jones were upgraded from second-degree murder to aggravated murder.
His trial is scheduled for January 2025.
