Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As winter weather continues to create hazardous conditions, UVA Orthopedics Chair Dr. Bobby Chhabra is urging residents to exercise caution to avoid injury. “We’re seeing a lot of ankle fractures, wrist fractures, and injuries related to falls and slipping on the ice, so please be careful out there,” Chhabra warned. With temperatures fluctuating, icy patches remain a serious risk, contributing to a surge in orthopedic injuries at UVA Health.
Hip fractures have been particularly concerning, requiring extensive treatment and care. “Every day we’re fixing hip fractures, some fractures can be fixed with plates and screws or nails, and others need a hip replacement,” Chhabra explained. He highlighted UVA’s designation by the International Geriatric Fracture Society for its excellence in hip fracture care, underscoring the hospital’s expertise in handling these serious injuries.
Beyond injury prevention, Chhabra also weighed in on the state of UVA basketball, praising the team’s progress under Ron Sanchez. “Despite all the noise, despite all the criticism early in the season, he has kept the team focused,” Chhabra said. With several strong wins, the Cavaliers are gaining momentum, though Chao acknowledged the challenges ahead. As the team faces a tough schedule, he remains hopeful that Sanchez’s leadership will continue to strengthen the program.
