Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a recent interview on WINA Morning News, Dr. Bobby Chhabra, Chair of UVA Orthopedics, shared his thoughts on Virginia athletics, from football and basketball to the impact of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) in college sports.

Dr. Chhabra noted the community’s excitement surrounding UVA’s athletic programs, particularly the football team’s recent progress under Coach Tony Elliott. “Football is just really starting to come together, and I’m really happy for Tony Elliott and his coaching staff,” he said.

Dr. Chhabra touched on basketball, noting a shift in Tony Bennett’s coaching strategy: “We have more size, we have more athleticism… so the offense is going to be changed to reflect the talent that’s on the floor.” He also emphasized the importance of injury prevention and recovery in sustaining these athletic programs, saying what they do with sports medicine is really about keeping athletes performing at their highest levels.

Dr. Chhabra also commented on the evolving dynamics of college sports and the legal developments surrounding NIL payments. He acknowledged the philosophical concerns some have but emphasized the reality of the situation stating, “Whether you philosophically like it or not, this is the reality.”
