CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As part of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, UVA Health’s Dr. Caroline Hinkle joined Morning News to raise awareness about the early signs of dementia and the importance of diagnosis and prevention. Dr. Hinkle explained that Alzheimer’s is just one type of dementia, emphasizing that common early symptoms include repeated questioning, losing items, and getting lost in familiar places.

“Alzheimer’s disease is a kind of dementia,” Hinkle said, clarifying that while forgetfulness can be normal with age, more frequent and disruptive changes signal a need for medical evaluation.

When asked about prevention, Dr. Hinkle highlighted the power of lifestyle choices, particularly for those with a family history of the disease.

“It raises your risk of developing it, but it’s certainly not a done deal,” she noted. She encouraged aerobic exercise, social engagement, and mentally stimulating activities like learning a new hobby or language as proactive steps to protect brain health.

Promising treatments are also emerging. Dr. Hinkle mentioned both oral medications and newer infusion therapies aimed at slowing disease progression. UVA offers a full spectrum of support through neuropsychology, neurology, and therapies, including speech and occupational therapy.

“We have a great multidisciplinary team,” Hinkle said, urging community members to seek help early and explore UVA’s available resources and research programs.
