Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As part of the WINA Live Well series, Dr. Dr. Cesarina Thohan, a vascular neurologist at the University of Virginia Health System, joined Morning News to raise awareness during Stroke Awareness Month. She emphasized that stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability, but noted, “The good news is that it’s often preventable if we look at the risk factors and… know how to control them.” Dr. Thohan pointed to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes as the top three contributors, with hypertension being the most dangerous.

Dr. Thohan also outlined warning signs using the acronym BE FAST: Balance issues, Eye changes, Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call 911. “We say time lost is brain lost,” she said. “The faster that we treat the stroke, the better the chances are for recovery.” She urged the community to know their numbers, such as maintaining blood pressure under 120/80 and cholesterol levels below 100, and get regular screenings through their primary care providers.

In cases where strokes are identified quickly, patients have a greater chance of full recovery. Dr. Thohan described treatment options such as clot-busting medications and procedures like mechanical thrombectomy. “We really want the public to be aware of the symptoms because the faster they come to the hospital, the better the chances for a better outcome,” she explained. She closed by thanking listeners for helping to spread awareness, reminding the public that prevention and education can be lifesaving.
