CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Dr. Bobby Chhabra, chair of UVA Orthopedics, recently visited the University of Virginia’s men’s basketball practice and walked away impressed by the team’s athleticism, pace, and maturity under new head coach Ryan Odom. “We’ve obviously spent a lot of money on this team,” said Dr. Chhabra, noting that several international players who could’ve been NBA draft picks chose UVA instead. “The the level of talent is very impressive. The level of athleticism is very impressive.

The new roster includes seasoned European professionals and experienced transfers like Dallin Hall from BYU and Malik Thomas from San Francisco. Dr. Chhabra observed a fast-paced offensive system and a “pretty frenetic defense,” signaling a major shift from UVA’s traditional style. “It’s going to be very different than what has been successful here over the last 15 years,” he added.

While Dr. Chhabra acknowledges the evolving world of college sports, he expressed caution about fully embracing it. “I think I’ve accepted it,” he said. “I just think that if we embrace it, then we are completely giving up on the student-athlete concept, and we are saying that college sports is now professional sports.” Despite concerns, he believes UVA is doing what it takes to remain competitive, and Coach Odom has the tools and vision to lead the team to success.
