Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Wendy Horton, CEO of the UVA Medical Center, recently discussed several significant initiatives aimed at expanding healthcare access and strengthening community ties. Horton emphasized the importance of the center’s outreach efforts, particularly in the West Haven community, where a new clinic has been established through the UVA School of Nursing. “What’s really cool is we now have a clinic at West Haven… Christina is our nurse there… she grew up just a couple blocks away and is now giving back to the community that she grew up in,” Horton shared, highlighting the personal connection and dedication involved.
Horton also highlighted the center’s ongoing efforts to improve access to essential services, such as the introduction of weekend lab services at the UVA Cancer Center. “If you need some labs to be drawn, we now offer weekend services on Saturday primarily in the cancer center,” she noted, recognizing the growing demand for flexible healthcare options.
In addition to these community-focused efforts, Horton announced the recent purchase of Piedmont Family Practice in Warrenton, bringing over 80 healthcare professionals into the UVA Health network. Horton explained that this purchase is part of a broader strategy to ensure that “no patient leaves Virginia for their healthcare,” reflecting UVA Health’s commitment to being a statewide resource.
These initiatives, alongside the recognition of UVA’s 24-hour pharmacy, highlight the Medical Center’s ongoing dedication to improving healthcare accessibility and quality across the region.
