CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Lars Tiffany, who coached Virginia men’s lacrosse to national championships in 2019 and 2021, expects to be back with the program in 2027.
Tiffany told Cville Right Now he spent Tuesday in individual meetings, and with a team captain planning for next year and is “excited about it.”
Tiffany is 108-51 in 10 seasons leading the Cavaliers, taking them to seven NCAA tournaments and four Final Fours.
In 2022, Tiffany signed a contract extension that ran through the 2026 season.
Virginia went 10-7 this year, its resurgent season ending with an NCAA tournament first round loss to Georgetown on Sunday night. The Cavaliers started the year 3-4 but then notched back-to-back wins over Notre Dame and Duke and went on to win the ACC tournament.
“It’s a really disappointing end to the season, obviously,” Tiffany said Sunday night after the loss 14-10 loss to the Hoyas. “Having said that, after last year, we have a losing record, which is blasphemy from the tradition and history and legacy I stand in front of you talking, representing Virginia lacrosse. That’s unacceptable. And we were sort of trending that way again. For the men in that locker room to stick together, to follow the messaging, to just keep trusting the coaches, and for the fans to keep trusting us, I’m incredibly grateful.”
UVA is expected to return a talented core of its team in 2027, including offensive stars McCabe and Brendan Millon, and Ryan Colsey, midfielder Joey Terenzi and defenseman John Schroter.
The Cavaliers will need to fill a hole in the cage, where transfer Jake Marek is out of eligibility. Truitt Sunderland, who led the team with 51 goals, also won’t be back.
“Next year’s team is going to build on the foundation of what we did this year,” Tiffany said. “Going 4-2 in ACC play, winning an ACC tournament, that’s a really big deal. We have to defend our turf better next year. We lost too many games here. But we took a big step. Now, we just launch from here.”
