CHARLOTTSVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – UVA Health is receiving a two-year, $637,000 grant to establish a hospital-based violence intervention program at UVA Health University Medical Center. The grant comes from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association Foundation. UVA Health will join a statewide network of hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) that have helped sharply reduce re-injury rates among survivors of community violence. Since 2019, the VHHA notes just 3 percent of the more than 8,000 victims of community violence served through Virginia HVIPs have been re-injured, compared with the national average of 40 percent for victims of community violence.
