CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris did not practice Monday but the the team is hopeful he will be available Saturday at Duke, coach Tony Elliott said Tuesday.
Elliott said Morris could return to practice Wednesday. UVA declined to say whether not Morris was dealing with a concussion or not, labeling his injury as an upper-body issue.
“He was out at practice yesterday. Obviously didn’t participate,” Elliott said. “But looked good, said he’s feeling good. Today will be another day going through the protocol, but he’s exercising which is a positive and we’re hopeful that, by tomorrow, we’ll have him back at practice.”
Morris left Saturday’s 16-9 home loss to Wake Forest after taking a second-quarter hit while sliding at the end of a run. He was sandwiched between a pair of Demon Deacons defenders, remained down on the field for a few minutes, then went straight to the UVA locker room.
He did not return to the game but did come out to the Virginia sideline in the second half, wearing street clothes.
After the game, Elliott said Morris would undergo testing Sunday and Monday.
UVA has two games remaining in the regular season – Saturday at Duke and home against rival Virginia Tech on Nov. 29.
Morris, a transfer from North Texas, ranks ninth in passing yards in the ACC with 2,088, eighth in touchdown passes (12) and seventh in completion percentage (66.7%). He’s led Virginia to an 8-2 record and a 5-1 mark in ACC play.
This is the second time this season Morris had to leave a game due to injury. In third quarter of the Cavaliers’ season-opening 48-7 win over Coastal Carolina, Morris was injured running for the goal line. He left the game with an injured left shoulder, something that has been plaguing him since.
He did not miss a game due to that shoulder injury, though UVA lost its next outing, 35-31 at North Carolina State.
In that first injury, Morris was hurt when he did not slide. Saturday’s issue occurred when he did slide.
“I like the fact that they have protection when they go to slide,” Elliott said. “It’s a slippery slope. … I’ve actually instructed Chandler to slide, to get down in those situations. You would hope that, with the slide, guys would be able to respond in time so you don’t get hit.”
