Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Bernie Ammons, Clinical Program Coordinator for Vascular Surgery at UVA Health, joined WINA Morning News to highlight the critical role of heart and vascular screenings, particularly for those at risk.
Ammons explained the distinction between vascular and heart disease, emphasizing the importance of awareness and early detection. “Vascular disease refers to conditions that affect the arteries, veins, and small vessels in the body,” she said, noting that factors like smoking and high cholesterol increase the risk of vascular conditions.
Ammons also stressed the importance of screenings, especially for individuals over 65 with risk factors. “A lot of people could be walking around with conditions…and not really be aware of it.” UVA Health offers community vascular screenings and one-time screenings covered by Medicare for eligible individuals.
Screenings are available at the UVA Health main campus, with appointments accessible by calling 434-924-5824.
